The Arkansas Education Association is focused on ensuring that every student has a caring, qualified and committed teacher. To help educators be their best, we host an annual professional development conference in Little Rock. Unfortunately, the continuing health risks posed by the Coronavirus pandemic has forced a shift to a Virtual conference this year. Though we will miss meeting in-person, we hope you will enjoy and find value in this year's offerings.

CANVAS LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Presenter(s): Ashley Kincannon The pandemic has forced many districts to consider virtual options for instruction, and some schools have begun shifting to Canvas. Canvas is an excellent learning management system. Come learn about the basics of Canvas and how I am using this resource in my classroom. You will leave with resources that will give you the guidance you need to get started with Canvas. By the end of the session, you will understand what Canvas is and how you can use Canvas effectively in your classroom.
DEVELOPING ESSENTIAL STANDARDS FOR IMPROVED UNIT PLANNING

Presenter(s): Megan Prettyman Have you ever gotten to the end of the year and realized you only taught half of what you are required to teach? The time it takes to meaningfully teach all state standards for each subject in each year is far longer than the time we actually have available to us as teachers. In this session, we will discuss Essential Standards, a solution to this problem. We will practice unpacking these standards and I will give examples of how this process has impacted and improved my teaching practice in my high school social studies classroom.
NAVIGATING THROUGH CHANGE: UNDERSTANDING THE POWER OF ADAPTIVE LEADERSHIP

This course is designed to help educators think about the change process and understand the importance of pivoting and adapting to the transition. Educators will learn about trauma, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), resilience, and specific ways to respond to and help children and youth exposed to trauma using a trauma-informed schools lens.

In 2016, the K-8 Embedded Computer Science standards were created, and classrooms K-8 should be integrating these standards. Come learn how you can bring robots into the classroom to engage students in writing. I will share two sample lessons that were used with both general education students and English Language Learners. Participants will leave with a lesson plan and the resources they need to implement this lesson in their classroom.
